Looking to build a new comp......

Vossa — Wed, 12/31/2008 - 17:58

So I'm looking to build my first computer.  After many years of taking my own computer apart I know that basics of most of the components.  But one thing I am still not sure about is the CPU-Motherboard compatibility. How do I know when I'm shopping for a CPU what motherboard will be compatible with it or vice-versa.  Are their certain numbers I should look for on the motherboard that will tell me the CPU type that it is compatible with. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

New Year's Day(Off) Rep & Achievement Farm!!1

Raid Zone:
Everywhere!

What better way to spend an extra day off from work than sleeping in (aka sleeping off the hangover from last night), then playing some WOW?

I need to start grinding some Kirin Tor rep for the helm enchant, so I'm thinking it would be fun to get a group of 5 together and rock some level 80 dungeons and heroic 5-mans for a few hours for the rep and achievements associated with them. Grab your tabard of choice and sign up!

Plan is to end just in time for Salmon's Naxx run, in case anyone who's in that wants to come for this. I won't make you late. Sign up for some or all of the time, and if you have particular dungeons you want to hit for the achievements or rep let me know!

Molten Core Achievement

Raid Zone:
Molten Core

So Ryu, my sister and I made a random pug for MC last night and got all but 3 (not counting Ragnaros) killed. its not scheduled to reset for a while but we wanted to get the achievement for MC (to kill ragnaros) wanted to know if any of you guys wanted to help and get your achievement too.

No you dont have to be attuned to get in, you just need the attunement to take the shortcut. But if youre 80 you can easily solo the shortcut attune quest.

anyway, planning to pick it up again at 6:30 server.  We just need some peeps with the water to summon Ragnaros, the patch hasnt come into effect where you dont need the water yet.

Mutilate

saedo — Tue, 12/30/2008 - 11:19

Mutilate is the premier single target dps spec nowadays, especially on Murderable mobs.    It is also the "most difficult" of the specs to play (though it's really not that hard), but you get your high dps as returns if you can pull it off.

Potentially, this spec is also a source of 3% more raid crit from Master Poisoner, but most raids will generally have a Ret Pally or Elem Shaman, or both, providing it.   Mutilates are probably the worst source of it and should not spec for it unless really needed.

IP / DP / Envenom

Therefore, the only spec for it currently is this 51/13/7.   If Master Poisoner is really needed, points should be shifted from Turn the Tables.    If you're not facing a lot of Murderable mobs, and want to min-max for that, Murder can be switched out for other fillers.    Though do note, Fleet Footed will not stack with Unholy DK's aura, and Quick Recovery can be very rendered useless through expertise.    So most likely, not much of a dps filler points if you move out of Murder.

Weapon wise, due to Focused Attacks and Poisons scaling, fast weapons recieved a boost in power.    Though do remember, speed isn't everything, just like Combat with Combat Potency, speed only gives a benefit, not an overriding rule.   You would main handing the Faster of your daggers, and offhanding the Slower of your daggers, finishers proc poisons which outweighs the *slightly* lower mutilate damage.

Glyph wise, there's not a lot of Mutilate glyphs out there.    You'd choose Slice and Dice and Rupture as the main 2.   The last one is really anything filler, nothing else helps with dps.

Cycle for Mutilate is more of a priority system.   Watch timers, hit the appropriate button to refresh the ones you need to.

  1. Keep HfB fully stacked at all times (can be done in stealth, out of combat, on the run, etc)
  2. Keep SnD up at all times you are dps'ing (start an SnD whenever)
  3. Mutilate to 4+ combo points
  • If SnD is low, Envenom
  • Else if Rupture is not up, Rupture
  • Else just Envenom til you can Rupture again

IP / IP / Evis

So another spec has been floating around now.   This involves 2 fast daggers (til 3.1), dual Instant Poison, which means relying on the raid (hunters) to provide the poison, and use Eviscerate.     So a bit more of a greedy spec, but supposed to be on par or above the old IP/DP/Envenom method.

The build would be something like this:  http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=fhxf0exoVboIzAo0xV0hZxb

And your third glyph would be the Eviscerate glyph.

Cycles are pretty much like before, but you're more likely to land 5 point finishers rather than 4+.

My most amazing Xmas present ever....

Aidin — Tue, 12/30/2008 - 06:33

This yuletide season started off a little hairy for us...money was tight bills were due.  We managed to some how pull it off and the kids had a great day.  I don't think the joy in their eyes on Dec. 25th could even compare to the joy that I received yesterday.

For those of you who have talked to me at length may know that I have a 16 year old daughter that I gave up for adoption at birth.  If you weren't aware, it's just because it's something that hasn't come up in conversations, as it's not something I've ever hide.  I had contact with the family that I chose to raise my baby for almost 10 years.  Due to some staffing changes in the South Carolina office, we lost touch about 6 years ago.  While this broke my heart...I moved on and kept reminding myself her 18th birthday is coming soon...and I had all the hope in the world that she will want to find me when she is able.

I was a complete slacker and didn't touch my email much over the holiday and the following weekend.  On Sunday I noticed I had a new friend request and an message.  I just looked over as I do most myspace things at first.  I figured I'd check it later.  I walk into work yesterday morning, open my Outlook (work email) and then open Yahoo Messenger....which reminds me I have mail...so I open that bad boy up and see the myspace reminder...ok let's see who this is....

If you haven't already guessed...yes the add and message were from my daughter!!!!!!!!  I spent most of my day yesterday chatting with her on instant messanger then a good 3-4 hours last night on the phone with her.  I can't even begin to tell you how much joy this has brought me...Xmas 2008 will go down in the history books for me.

Here are a few pictures of my first born I'd like to share with my second family...

https://www.n1gallery.com/g2/v/cpatterson/taryn/

She has grown into such a wonderful young lady.  She's smart, she's beautiful..and a bit of proof heredity can sometimes outweigh environment she has the EXACT same personality as Mia, and I.  The connection between us and the connection with her little sister were instant.

So that my friends was my xmas miracle, no it wasn't a chain saw...nor a fishing pole...but the gift of a complete heart, having all 3 of my children in my life.

Combat

saedo — Tue, 12/30/2008 - 01:26

Combat has become a secondary dps spec.   For single target dps, it comes behind Mutilate, especially Murderable mobs.   However, it does better in trash, multi-add fights, interrupted fights.    It is also the best source for Savage Combat (2% more physical damage), probably better than Arms Warrrior (Blood Frenzy) over Fury warriors nowadays.   So it is advisable to have at least 1 combat rogue in a raid.

Spec wise, it is not really the case where Sword spec dominates everything else.   The spec itself is still best, but talents like Prey on the Weak boost crit value which boosted Fist/Dagger spec.   Also, through itemization, swords only having 1.5 - 1.6 speeds to them compared to daggers 1.3 - 1.5 speeds gave Dagger offhands another boost.    It'll be better spec'ing around the weapons you can obtain, using a spreadsheet to check which is better, and not gunning for a particular weapon spec.

There are 2 schools of thought for combat specs, they are said to be very close, some debate on which is actually better.    They are the 7/51/13 build, and the 15/51/5 build.    Note, although it's a sword/CQC spec, you would move points to where your weapon spec lies.   If you're using 2 weapons of the same type, then the extra points are filler you can put anywhere.    For specs of different weapon type, the points you should sacrifice should be from Sword Spec, go 4/5 sword and 5/5 in the other for maximum benefit.

Now, I will go into each spec type with more depth.

7/51/13

This spec goes into Serrated Blades, and sacrifices a point in Imp SnD.

Glyphs it would go for is Sinister Strike, Rupture, and Blade Flurry or Slice and Dice if you're having trouble with upkeep.

The goal of this build is to, while maintaining 100% SnD uptime, also try to maintain near 100% rupture uptimes.     Cycle would be 4+/5r, nothing else just SnD and Rupture.     Even with Energy Pooling, there will be times where Rupture would still be up, and can't override due to previous higher AP values, those times you'd just SS more til you can Rupture again.

15/51/5

This would be similar to the vanilla wow combat spec, going into Ruthlessness and Lethality, maxing SnD, but also sacrifice points in Sword Spec if applicable.

Glyphs it would go for is Sinister Strike, Slice and Dice, and Rupture

This build introduces a 3 finisher cycle, 3+s/5r/5e.    While maintaining 100% SnD uptimes, rupture when you can, and can probably squeeze in an Evis with decent luck on procs.

Poisons

For either, your choice of poisons will be Deadly Poison, and Wound Poison.   With the 50% proc rate, and lack of talents in Imp Poisons for combat, Wound Poison will out do Instant Poison, always.    Here's an AP crossover chart if you do happen to have points in it for whatever nub reason to make Instant Poison the better poison.

Rank of Improved Poisons Attack power
1 19250
2 7875
3 4084
4 2188
5 1050

As for what poison to put on what hand.   Depends.    If your offhand is 1.4 speed or faster, put Wound Poison on it, Deadly on the other.   Else, put Wound Poison on the main hand, Deadly off.

Update for 3.0.9+:  So with 40% SnD now, people at the higher end of gear actually has Wound Poison surpassing Deadly Poison.   Not a whole lot, maybe 10ish dps.   But Dual Wound has become the ideal setup.    Provided your gear is good enough for it.    Exactly when?   Check a spreadsheet.
