Looking for a friendlier guild

Am I getting older and grumpier and meaner or are more people becoming septic tanks of idiocy?
My theory about apping goes like this: If you're not a mouth-breathing, inbred douchehat with the people skills of a suppository, an application is a wonderful opportunity to express why you'd be a great part of our team. Don't people want to be part of a group where they know those group members have been carefully selected? Who wants to join a guild (or a baseball team, or rowing team, or knitting team, etc) where everyone gets in automatically?
We're not elitist. We're selective. There's a big difference. We're not better than you. You just might not be a good fit for us.
The more I think about it, the more I realize that the same person that refuses to fill out an app for "just a video game" is the same guy that:
- Complains about repair bills while learning new content
- Doesn't buy reagents
- Didn't read the strat
- Gems his stuff in green gems
- Doesn't enchant anything
- Complains that he can't find a group then logs off after 3 minutes
- Won't help others and then gets mad he can't get a group for his run
I know these guys. They run rampant in this stupid game. I'm glad we have an app process because, hopefully, I'm the last jackass we ginvited :P

I had a funny convo with a paladin the other day. He was like "app..lol" too. He thought that I should invite him based on his +heal alone! lol Then he asked if he could talk to a guild officer...as he wanted my boss...cause he didn't like my answer. Next thing you know...he's talkin to Nuit...who guess what...told him the same damn thing..
We had a little fun with him...lol

I think our members realize that wearing the tag means you make that little bit of extra effort to truly maximize. I would hate to be associated with people who honestly have a problem with being the best they can be when it requires very simple effort on their own part.

Dragonspear — Tue, 05/13/2008 - 07:58I don't think that requiring gems/enchants is elitist at all. Hell most of the guild will quickly help you get said enchants and even foot some of the mats at times.
In LF1m, how many people (myself included) ended up getting Night's End for their SR set by some guildie doin some of the work?
You might think that there is no difference between green gems and blue or now epic gems. But there are, thats slightly more stam on a tank to prevent a wipe, thats slightly less AP, SpDmg, Hit, Crit on a dpser that leaves a boss at 1% instead of killing him. Thats +heal that might have kept your tank alive instead of runnin back for yet another attempt.
For the most part if you foot the bill of those epic gems, you try to get those extra few mats for those better enchants they will pay themselves off. Thats Faster clears, fewer wipes, another boss downed. Most weeks overall, even learning new content at times I MAKE money while raiding. I think part of that is mains keeping up on there gear. As I said, they will pay themselves off in the long run.

Aidin — Tue, 05/13/2008 - 07:33When my main aquires a piece of gear...it gets gemmed and enchanted IMMEDIATLY before next raid. (my alts are alts...so meh...whenever) It's just common sense. I personally would like the same effort from the rest of the people that I raid/wipe with. If that makes me elitist...then so be it...but honestly it's not. We aren't a "starter guild" we have standards, and it's not unrealistic to expect our applicants to care more then the average joe.

Elitism on our part would be like if we said "Sorry, we don't ginvite rogues," or "the only shamen we invite to raid are resto, the others are a waste of space." Simply asking people to not be lazy with socketing their gear is not elitist.
It's the same reason we ask that people enchant their gear - sure, it might not make a *huge* difference but the little things all add up.

Everyone is a noob and has to start out somewhere, getting to know both the ins and outs of their class as well as general in-game courtesies. However, Garreth puts in a ridiculous amount of time trying to make downfall be a great guild to be in, and honestly, if someone is going to hassle him for "daring" to be selective in who he lets in, then all the more reason to NOT let them in.
I don't think the elitist attitude necessarily applies to this particular post, but I have seen it in action. There is a fine line between funny and mean, and I'd like to see it crossed less often.

convertibull — Tue, 05/13/2008 - 07:01I dislike applying to guilds and rarely ever do so. I do understand both sides of the spectrum on this subject. As a correction, Downfall IS elitist in some ways, just not as much as the other guilds that are in our stage of progression. criticizing people on the use of green gems is a good example of this. Sure using better gems makes it easier, but it really doesn't make THAT much of a difference. I'm by no means encouraging peole to half ass their gems and what not, but I still stand by the statement that a lot of us often have elitist attitudes and should at least recognize that its there.
