FIOS and WoW Performance
garreth — Mon, 06/23/2008 - 13:44
I'm considering switching to FIOS. I'm at the point in WoW where the only things I can possibly do to improve my performance are 1)hardware upgrades and 2) Internet upgrades.
Currently, on Comcast, I'm at 300+ latency during the evenings. I'd like to get this as low as possible and was wondering if anyone has any experience with Verizon FIOS. Hit me with some numbers like max download rate and, more importantly, WoW latency.

Last summer Verizon tore up
Sorahn — Mon, 06/23/2008 - 21:10Last summer Verizon tore up my street/sidewalk to put in FIOS. They then did the door by door sales pitch for their internet/phone/tv deal. I was pretty excited to see what they had to offer and was actually quite surprised at how little it impressed me. They were actually more expensive than Comcast for comparable speeds. True, I could have a higher top end (send & recieve) but the default speeds I'm getting w/Comcast are FAR more than adequate for my household (22700 KB/s down and 1600 KB/s up according to speedtest.net). And, like Star mentioned, throughput <> latency which is far more important for WoW which doesn't actually push many bits over the wire.
Here are some stats for portland based ISPs. http://speedtest.net/global.php?continent=1&country=1®ion=95&city=105037
Hate to break this to you
Kybosh — Mon, 06/23/2008 - 18:01Hate to break this to you dude. But Verizon doesn't offer FIOS in the Portland Metro Area. You'd have to move west to Beaverton or East to Troudale to get their service. The City of Portland will not allow Verizon to lay their fiber optic cables.
Karli and I looked into this a couple months ago. It was sad news.
Roger on the hallway thing.
garreth — Mon, 06/23/2008 - 16:05Roger on the hallway thing. I'm really hoping that fiber = fewer jumps = lower latency.
It is a wider hallway so

I'm looking for sub-100 ping here. I'm going to call them soon.
Hmmm...
Saja — Mon, 06/23/2008 - 15:44Hmmm... $100/month??
Kleine is poor!
My parents have FIOS service
Amenn — Mon, 06/23/2008 - 14:29My parents have FIOS service and I would describe it as liquid hot sex.
Seriously I wouldn't flinch at paying 150$ a month for that service, and I'd probably shell out 200 if I had to. I call them about 4 times a year just to see if they've expanded service to my area.
FIOS is beyond awesome, I cannot say enough good things about it.
FiOS on my side of the
Agoney — Mon, 06/23/2008 - 14:17FiOS on my side of the country is vastly superior to cable, espeacially since Verizon just ran new optical lines across the whole seaboard. Verizon wants you to sign an 1-2yr agreement, but you can choose month to month if you want, it's just a little bit more per each month.
If I didnt have such a good deal for RoadRunner I'd switch. Here's pricing for FiOS in my area tho.
Up to 10 Mbps/2 Mbps - $42.99 1st month of Internet FREE
Up to 20 Mbps/5 Mbps - $52.99 1st month of Internet FREE
Up to 20 Mbps/20 Mbps $12 off months 2-3 in addition to your first month FREE. - $64.99 1st month of Internet FREE
Up to 50 Mbps/20 Mbps - $89.95
Right now my RR is 20 down, 1.5 up. Anything more then 20 is really overkill. 20/5 would be my choice.
