WoWbuntu 1.0
garreth — Sun, 07/06/2008 - 23:32
Well, my little linux project is coming to fruition. Basically, I've set out to build a linux machine that can handle WoW and all the stuff that surrounds it.
Attached is a little video of the machine in action, complete with Ventrilo and WoW running side-by-side (emulated through Wine).
Next up will be the WWS parsing program and then an open source alternative to the WoWAceUpdater called WoWUIUpdater (http://www.wowinsider.com/2007/05/10/addon-spotlight-wow-ui-updater/).
Open the video with a video player that supports ogg theora (http://www.theora.org/).

Can't enable onboard sound
Dufe — Thu, 07/10/2008 - 08:47Can't enable onboard sound for the mic? Or did you manage to find one of the 3 mobo's in existance today with no built-in sound?
I flipped on the onboard
garreth — Thu, 07/10/2008 - 09:09I flipped on the onboard sound to test the input. Still no dice.
Would kill for a native client.

Yeah, I've practically lived
garreth — Tue, 07/08/2008 - 12:39Yeah, I've practically lived in that thread for about 2 days now. My issue has to do with a known bug that exists in SoundBlaster Audigy 2 cards in Linux. Mic works perfectly in voice apps native to linux like Mumble, but as soon as Wine has to jump in and emulate it, it goes kaboom.
Looks like I'll be running vent from a windows box for a while.

Well, the ONLY thing that I
garreth — Tue, 07/08/2008 - 06:38Well, the ONLY thing that I cannot get working is my microphone in Ventrilo in Linux.
I have to emulate Ventrilo and I can hear everyone just fine. However, Ventrilo running through the emulator (Wine) will just not recognize any incoming audio from my microphone :( Of course, my mic works just fine in all other sound apps across my Linux.
Looks like I'll have to have an old windows box sitting next to my desk just to run Vent :( At this time, Vent has had a Linux version "in development" since 2004 (http://ventrilo.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7071). I really wish they'd get off their ass and get it done.
Makes me really want us to switch to Mumble (http://mumble.sourceforge.net/) since it's a VoIP client that EVERYONE can use. And it sounds better at lower resource usage.

So far, WoW runs at about
garreth — Mon, 07/07/2008 - 09:36So far, WoW runs at about 120 fps in Ironforge but there is this mild pause every 2 or 3 seconds. Most people won't notice it, but I do because I'm a freak. There are a few tweaks I can do to improve performance, so I'll be trying that tonight.
