Right now it will prob take around 4 days to make your copy. (demand is huge right now due to the new wave)

IMO, go ahead and use a character pre-made (which also might take awhile) or make a deathknight while you wait.

Anyone know if the copy copies your toon the moment you hit copy? Or does it copy it after the whole pending thing and actually goes through?

When your on the beta page, there's a link for Character Copy and a separate on for Template. When you click template it will show you the # left for it only. When you click Character Copy it will show those remaining.

Nah, sometimes it just gets finiky. Like, i was in the middle of transferring a toon to my account, and suddenly it decided i had no transfers, and wasn't allowed to transfer the one that was pending. A few hours later and that toon was on my account and I had the transfers back.

Toon copies can take anywhere from 3 hours to 6 days. It gets kinda rediculous at times.

NOTE: When it says "Your name has been flagged for rename," you don't usually HAVE to rename. You should be able to just leave it the same and click ok.
