The Rules of Pregnancy
karlizeth — Wed, 07/23/2008 - 12:11
One of the annoying things about being pregnant is all the rules that you all of a sudden have to follow. Many of which I have broken...and happily. A lot of these are completely random and you may not even hear about until you actually experience having a little one on the way. Starred items indicate that I have broken them at some point
.
- No Smoking
- No Second-Hand Smoke
- No Drinking*
- No Caffeine (or less than 3 servings per day)*
- Take a prenatal vitamin every day, including before you get pregnant if you are planning on it*
- No Changing Cat Litter
- No lifting heavy objects*
- No working with chemicals/fumes
- No lying flat on your back
- Sleep only on your left side*
- No getting your heart rate above 140 beats per minute*
- No hot tubs, heating pads, or long baths (as to not raise core body temperature)
- No "global" preventative medications (this means if you have to treat a symptom, treat it at the site, such as treating allergies via a nasal spray rather than ingesting a pill)
- No X-Rays
- No Amusement Park rides (except the boring ones)
- No fake sugar (splenda, nutra-sweet, etc)**
- No dyeing your hair**
- No perms or other chemicals on your scalp
- No deli meats*
- No soft cheeses (unpasteurized)*
- No large/deep sea fish (such as tuna)
- Very limited herbal teas (and caffeinated ones are already off limits). Teas on the "no" list include: chamomile, hibiscus, and lemongrass.
- No sushi or other raw fish
- No smoked foods (like salmon)
- No cured foods (like hot dogs)
- No contact sports
- No "undercooked" foods (think runny eggs or rare steaks)
I'm sure there is more, but I thought it might amuse some people to see some of the random or lesser known stuff on this list. Oh...and I should mention that most of this goes while you are breast feeding too, so it's not just the 9 months you gotta put up with it.
In other news: I discovered what might possible the most awesome new mother product out there.

Deleyna — Thu, 07/24/2008 - 15:27lol you reminded me of a few things I had forgotten it;s been like 7 yrs since i was pregnant last and i forgot about the herbal teas & such LOL

Aidin — Fri, 07/25/2008 - 07:03I quit smoking thru all of my pregnancies. However...I was not able to let the caffeine go (in form of diet soda)...maybe that's why my kids are so damn hyper!
Ouch. Yeah, doc wouldn't
karlizeth — Thu, 07/24/2008 - 06:56Ouch. Yeah, doc wouldn't let me use claritin, I've been using Rhinocort as I need it. A friend of ours has a wife that's due in a few weeks, and I guess normally she's on antidepressants or perhaps anxiety meds. Her doc won't let her take them, and the poor guy says she's been less than nice these last few months.
No allergy pills. My poor
Pedran — Thu, 07/24/2008 - 05:36No allergy pills.
My poor wife had allergy attacks through most of her pregnancy, but her gyno wouldn't let take anything for the allergies. Even the nose-spray was off-limits.
Yet another post defining moments when I am happy to be male.
O and dont forget about
jaibyrd — Wed, 07/23/2008 - 20:01O and dont forget about stayin out of hot tubs...lol. Basically all the fun you had gettin pregnant is now illegal. sigh. Enjoy though... I loved havin babies.

karlizeth — Wed, 07/23/2008 - 18:47Lepp, the extent of my alcohol consumption has basically been occassionally stealing sips of beer off of kybosh's bottle. Maybe once every other week....what can I say, I love the taste of beer. I haven't had more than an ounce or two at a time for six months.
And while I have not given up caffeine completely, I went from a pretty nasty habit to mostly 0-2 servings per day. Kinda helps when coffee makes you throw up
.
And on that same vein, I work with kids that have all sorts of problems caused by either in-utero drug/alcohol use or even use as an infant/toddler being passed on through breast milk (or even worse, through irresponsible parenting).
/facepalm alcohol I am not
Ardea — Wed, 07/23/2008 - 17:04/facepalm alcohol
I am not sure you know how really bad that is for a developing fetus... and yes they do get alcohol and caffine through your body.
Hate to be a stick in the mud but working with pathologists i see some really bad things.
While that list is a good
jaibyrd — Wed, 07/23/2008 - 16:54While that list is a good start the thing I noticed more about being pregnant was this; my sense of smell was incredibly heightened and my fingernails grew fast....I could smell danger and I was dangerous...good skills for a vulnerable body I say!!

Question, I knew eating tuna
Ewiges — Wed, 07/23/2008 - 16:39Question, I knew eating tuna is bad (though some disagree)... but after looking at the list what ARE you allowed to eat? cereal and bread? FUCK!
Jaibyrd, Actually, sage is
karlizeth — Wed, 07/23/2008 - 16:11Jaibyrd,
Actually, sage is safe for cooking but unsafe for drinking in herbal teas. There are a lot of herbs that aren't safe in teas, but the ones I listed are more common teas.
And yes Finndo, that is totally one I did forget. I should know, I've been drinking craptons of Maalox with all the heartburn I have and I HATE it. For clarity, you're not supposed to have anything with too much calcium carbonate.

RE: No dyeing your hair** No
Aidin — Wed, 07/23/2008 - 12:17RE:
No dyeing your hair**
No perms or other chemicals on your scalp
Contrary to common fears...it's not for the reasons one may think. There's been no medical reason why you shouldn't use chemicals such as dies and perms. The reasoning behind these are because your hormones are all out of whack, and the normal color/curl will not take like it used to when you dye/perm during pregnancy.
Just a little backup fact from your neighborhood mother of 2, frequent dyer, former permer, and beauty school drop out. :)
