Ever get tired of the Alt vs. Main in a raid discussion?

Ardea's picture

Ardea — Thu, 02/14/2008 - 19:24

Ever get tired of the Alt vs. Main in a raid discussion?

Summary:

- It is the sole discretion of the raid leader

- Mains have priority over alts

I do not know a single person in Downfall that does not know that Mains will always have preferable treatment over alts... granted I do not know a whole bunch of DF-ers but I really hope among those that raid this is a given. This is not meant to convince or argue either side of the debate, I would just like to see a thread where someone offers to “help out if needed” on an alt and no one feels the need to mention the Main/Alt rules. The result is usually the person who offered has to type out a long explanation on what they meant by the offer.

I like poking a bee hive with a stick…

All posts that (I have read and) mentioned bringing Alts to raid have said "if possible" or “if needed” acknowledging the fact that it may not be possible/ needed, which makes any debate on whether or not to bring an alt pointless. It is nice to have them available if their alt Class/function will save a raid from being called. Saying “no alts” is crippling. Chewing on people who offer to help is annoying… sorry, that sounds harsh, I agree.

There are benefits to bringing GEARED alts (GEARED, GEARED, GEARED… geared) of a different class/function as the main to a raid.

1. Class balance: 20 DPS is not going to get far without healers and tanks

2. Cross training: In my philanthropic view of the universe players make better players when they understand more about what is going on around them and the capabilities of those he is relying on. “What do you mean I can’t just run into 10 elites and immediately spam my AOE and expect to live”, “Why can’t this tank get enough agro in the 2.5 seconds it takes to cast a fireball” Dumb examples but playing other classes help give different perspectives that contribute to a raid.

3. Reserves: We know choices are a good thing… see reason one. Blah blah Attunements. Options; Player A in raid one is locked but his alt isn’t and we need him… wait he wasn’t able to get attuned. (Counterpoint: attunements are going away in the future… that doesn’t help get the character geared and able to help in the present… I fail at being unbiased)

4. Getting the attunement quest and quest rewards for an alt makes a GEARED, attuned, alt that can stand in if needed.

General rules (subject to my opinions… I think they are obvious but I am going to mention them anyway)

1. If your main is needed your alt is not. If your main is DPS and you made a DPS alt, grats on the PvP character. (LOL @ Lepp and Porter… yea, silly of me… now Lepp has someone willing to open his lock boxes)

2. GEAR, GEAR, GEAR. Being ran through instances stopped at lvl 50… or 65… No one wants to raid with someone who will bring nothing of value to the raid or cannot pull their own weight… this is referred to as a wasted raid spot or dead weight.

3. Work with your raid leader to see if the alt is raid ready. Be considerate… no one wants to keep looking a character that is not ready… Do research! If the alt is not ready get to work before requesting to raid with him. Who wants to spend their play time looking to see if alts are ready to raid?

4. If an alt is not ready, be honest and tell the person. This is where a simple “no” or an over-quoted “you are not ready” is perfectly acceptable… if you are offended that your alt is not ready then you fail.

5. Blanket rules such as “no alts” are convenient but not very helpful. If the alt is a viable stand in it should be considered in times of “if needed”. Who wants to spend their play time looking to see if alts are ready to raid?

6. Experience: end-game is not the time to learn your classes raid function… go to a heroic/ Kara/ mAlt raid. With the removals of attunement requirements this is going to be a more common issue. I am against removing the attunements.

7. If someone offers to raid on an alt they are offering to sacrifice their chance to get loot so that the raid can kill things… I am a optimist. I do not think everyone with an alt is a loot whore… yes that is the impression I get when people feel the need to remind us of the Main/Alt rules. If loot on my alts meant that much to me the alts would be a secret in some other guild… unknown…

I am sure I am missing stuff, maybe creating a book/story “How to get your alt in a raid” would be helpful, that way when people offer to help on an alt it will be assumed that they have read the official guild stance on the subject and no one will be compelled to force that person in a defensive corner with a conversation of loot whoring as well as create a blanket rule of no alts allowed.

Wouldn’t be easier to say “thanks for the little life you have and leveling up additional classes so as to help the raid progress”?

I am Lepp, Porter, and Ardea and I am… tired at work… going on 15 hours =(

My view is akin to Gares's,

Shihli — Tue, 02/19/2008 - 14:43

My view is akin to Gares's, however not quite as ... aggressive I suppose.

My view:
Pick a toon to commit to a raid and stick with it.

We're at the stage now where Karazhan is so absolutely farmable that we bring in any number of alts in any number of raids during a week.  Zul'Aman may someday hit that point as well, however the gear requirements (along with class balance requirements) are such that you can't just noob it up in there with a fresh-faced lv. 70 in greens and blues.

However, for the 25-mans it's a completely different story.  Originally, I would help LF1M on my shaman because my hunter would be locked out from whatever instances they were raiding that week.  My shaman has been extended into an alt that has enough flexibility in gear to perform the roll of a dps (melee or ranged) or a healer.  I am actively trying to attune him to MH/BT based SOLELY on the idea that if, on a given night, we're held back from raiding because we're lacking ONE healer, I can switch onto him and we can go forward.  I would only opt to play him over my hunter in that event, and that event only.

An alt can be an incredibly useful resource (see: Pudolski and Disrupta).  It can also be a burden.  The difference lies in the player.  Whereas previous raiders with Alt-itis (Crossgrip) would always try to get into whatever raid was available on whichever toon was his Flavor-of-the-Month, Epatrick, Disrupter, and myself volunteer our ALTS only in the event they are needed.  Otherwise, we raid on our mains exclusively.

karlizeth — Tue, 02/19/2008 - 10:28

Nice job Lepp, this was a fun thread for me to read!

I have been leveling a holy priest as a pet project, and while I certainly expect it to take maybe 2 months or so to get her to 70, there was one driving reason behind her creation: to do something COMPLETELY different than my main.

I really really liked the point Lepp brought up about how playing other classes gives you a better understanding of how all our roles fit together.

I don't think any of us really expect to be given any sort of preferential treatment on our alts, but at the heart of it is that if you are skilled, geared, and needed more than your main at one particular point in time, it is sure nice to be able to have something you can switch out.

PS - Mages <3 Pudo tank.  And Garreth BoPs.  I am just wondering though, who loves Mages w/ Ice Block most?  Karli, Hamfist healers, or Hamfist tanks? Laughing

Gares of War — Tue, 02/19/2008 - 10:21

I am no longer tired of the discussion because it will never stop.  People always want to gear up several characters with epics and will continue to due so.  This conversation occured Pre BC, now BC, and will go into WotLK.

People get tired of their character, never say a thing, then say "Hey! Can my dps alt go through here?  I have plenty of knowledge and phat buffs to givez out lol, plx!"

I do feel people can reroll characters if they cannot find a raid spot, but it seems everyone goes the path of dps for dps.

just to clarify, a druid is

Epatrick — Fri, 02/15/2008 - 18:23

just to clarify, a druid is not an "AoE" tank, that job sits firmly on the shoulders of the pally tanks, try keeping 7 mobs under control with a buck wild mage and three locks seeding on a druid, and you'll find a lot of cloth and blood sprayed everywhere.  My single target is worse, my two target threat is worse, but on three or more targets, I am the best AoE tank in the game :)

oh, and ALL of an alts gear should either be crafted, earned or bought in ten mans and special case 25's, the reason he's an alt is he's a pet project.  something you've been thinking about/experimented with and have tested without the repair bills of twenty five other people on the line.  When I geared up and talented pudo at seventy, the new prot tree had just been tweaked and in all of wow I had seen two other prot type pallys (who were healing with a few points in prot for holy shield)  I did my first heroic Shadow labs with 9.7k hp and a ton of theory craft I'd never seen or tried before.  Now my alt is 'freakishly' geared, I kicked in Vashj's face because my healers were fucking on their game and Hyjal trash (with pk nuit mnor and pudo) is totally hamfist's bitch.  People have actually been mad at me for passing on gear because I do my job so well, but he's still an alt, he'll still only be called upon when we're in need of tanks and my shadowbolts will be burning Illidan come spring.

I have no idea where that wall came from, all I really meant to say was "An alt is something you cringe about bringing in, when they call your non-main character by name and want him, he's not an alt, he's an asset"

AH wait!!!! no mention has been made about switching! Lepp is my first and my preference...well my first that really counts.... my actual first is on a PvE server and lvl 23.

I have already mentioned that I do want raiding with Ard to be an option but he is not ready for anything more that heroics and Kara.... but Porter... hmm. The only reason I would switch is if I was asked to do so.

I do fear the wrath of Garreth... sure he sounds like a cute and cuddily teddy bear... wait that is sounding wrong... erm... nvm.

Lepp, if you want to raid on

Shihli — Fri, 02/15/2008 - 11:06

Lepp, if you want to raid on Ardea, then say so.  Don't pussyfoot around the subject!  :D

However, do realize that by announcing unto the world that you have changed mains, a few things may happen:

1)  You may not raid regularly, due to class balance and the general attitude displayed by "switchers" in the past.

DISCLAIMER - I'm not saying you're like Crossgrip!  However, people who liberally switch main toons as they see fit are generally not well-received.  Crossgrip was known to raid on as many as FIVE TOONS in a given week (warrior and/or rogue in BWL, rogue/hunter/warlock/druid in MC/ZG), and claimed that they all deserved DKP and loot priority because "in THIS instance, this is MY MAIN."

2)  You may incur the Wrath of Garreth.

The beauty of having a

Agoney — Fri, 02/15/2008 - 10:51

The beauty of having a priest is I can heal or do DPS, and be decent in PvP. Im sitting @ 1100 healing (Not great, but consider disc talents only, with no gear enchanted for plus healing, gemmed for res and stam/mp5 and most of the healing gear is pvp). Also, the beauty about BT is that it drops soooo much Cloth healing gear, so once Jas gets her pieces, I'm usually next inline for the drop. If I needed to heal for a night or two I wouldnt be against it, but some gold would be nice to cover ridic respec costs. (least 2.4 I wont have to retrain skills!)

The only real benefit I could see of Attuning Ag would be for archimonde, if we're short on rogues/melee and I forget sights/shins info, and even then I wouldn't push it unless we thought it was best for the rogue to get attuned.

HOWEVER DYLONN IS LEVEL 42 AND SPITS HOT FIYAH SO LOOK OUT. WHEN I GET TO 70 I WILL NEED MY DKP DIVIDED BETWEEN BOTH ANTI AND DYLONN :P

Shihli — Fri, 02/15/2008 - 09:52

Ehh, having a different type of dps on your alt makes it a different kind of fun too.  I rarely get to mix it up in melee on Shihli, so it's fun to do it on Luchs (particularly when it results in 1-shotting mobs and recent lv. 70's in cloth).

Oh, and I'll get more experience healing, G.  :P

Yarr. We've done a great job

garreth — Fri, 02/15/2008 - 09:31

Yarr. We've done a great job of getting the alt-whores out of guild. Nowadays the discussion revolves around "can this alt help this raid?" or "hey, let's start up an alt 10 man!" which is a much better situation to be in.

I retract one of my previous statements about dps mains having dps alts.  God know there's enough rogues floating around.  If a half geared rogue main wanted to roll an elemental shammy and grind up (or, in Turth's case an enhancement shammy), then the discussion about the alt is a lot more legit. Well, the discussion actually becomes "It's time to switch mains", but that's for another time.

Lepp, you might want to

Shihli — Fri, 02/15/2008 - 09:24

Lepp, you might want to re-read the latest "alt discussions".

Nowhere in those discussions has anyone really said "No alts!  Ever!  None in our raids!  RABBLE RABBLE"  And none of the people volunteering alts have said "We want lewt!  Gimme!"

The most recent discussion has more to do with appropriate gear and experience balance than anything else.  I'm a good shaman, but I'm FAR better at my hunter in every sense.  Likewise, my hunter's sitting on T6-equivalent gear whereas my shaman's pimping straight T4- and ZA-equivalent.

In short, this discussion is not really that similar to the old Crossgrip discussions of old.  Furthermore, because of that experience, we can straight up tell people "Get on your main, not going to do this again."  What's more, if people bitch and moan, we can just say "It's in writing, read the site, get over it."

garreth — Thu, 02/14/2008 - 20:43

Also, people who roll dps alts who have dps mains... seriously, what the fuck.  Every single main who's alt we've BT attuned has been of a completely separate raid role.   Rupta is a tank, Pudo is a tank.  Luchs is healing.  Luchs needs much more healing practice, imo ;)

Eh.....

You have any idea how badly I wanted to get Disrupta into raid when I first joined Downfall? Was so worried my terrible mage was going to get me booted, had no idea what the fuck I was doing XD.... the only thing I think that saved my ass was my first Vashj attempt, like the first few tainteds were on my side XD...... Garreth got to see me go OH SHIT, and blow up the tainted with every stupid cd I could muster.

Thanks for putting up with my ignorant mageness :P. And every once in a while I get to dust of 'rupta and get back in to the tanking loop:

I call the next Void Cry- I mean Pillar of Ferocity.

The fact that it is in writing and we still feel the need to comment everytime someone offers an alt class option is a little sad. I have a feeling that it must be a spill over from previous experience... there must have been a lot of fun before I got here... Crossgrip.

I would like to point out that I have never asked to raid on Porter... who for some reason is PVE spec...
