The el oh el Hunter.
Derchlon — Mon, 07/28/2008 - 15:51
Hunters have been mocked as being one of the "easiest" classes to play in WoW by many people. So much so, that they gained a nickname to demonstrate this lack of skill: Huntard. What these people don't realize, is all of the thought processing that a good hunter has to go through in order to maximize DPS.
The naturally built in damage that a hunter gets is Autoshot. Autoshot takes .5 seconds to fire, but has a cooldown based on weapon speed. Hunter's have several shots in their spell book, that are used regularly, that do damage besides the naturally built in Autoshot. These include Aimed Shot, Arcane Shot, Multishot, and Steady Shot. While Aimed Shot does the most damage of the three, it has the longest cast time with 3 seconds as well as restarting the autoshot timer. This means that its really only good for an opening shot with Misdirection, or a fight where you REALLY need the Mortal Strike debuff that it brings to the table. Arcane Shot is an instant shot that deals decent damage, and Multishot is essentially an instant cast as well, that does damage to three targets and is about on par in damage with Arcane shot. Steady Shot is a 1.5 second cast shot that does decent damage, but it is your most mana/damage efficient shot. The biggest problem with Steady Shot, is that while casting that 1.5 second shot, your autoshot cannot fire, and thus, cannot start its cooldown time. You will want to use this shot as often as you reasonably can.
Now, your ranged weapon speed will determine which shots you can use and when, due to the autoshot cooldown. The trick, is to fire as many Steady Shots and special shots as possible without slowing down the speed of your autoshot by trapping it inside Steady Shot's cast time. This practice is called Shot Weaving, and it is very important, otherwise the hunter will lose quite a bit of the DPS he or she is capable of. Beast Mastery Hunters have talents that reduce your weapon speed, which allow you to fire more frequently, but it limits the amount of special shots you can use, as the Autoshot cooldown may be delayed, also known as a clipped shot. These types of hunters should stick to a 1:1 shot rotation, which consists of Steady Shot, Autoshot, Steady Shot, Autoshot, etc. Other Hunters such as Marksmanship and Survival have a little more time on their Autoshot cooldown, and can fit in more special shots. This gets a little more complicated, as these hunters can run either a 1.5:1 shot rotation, or a 3:2 shot rotation depending on gear. A 1.5:1 rotation consists of Steady Shot, Autoshot, Arcane Shot, Steady Shot, Autoshot, Steady Shot, Multishot, etc. You cannot fit in any more specials between the Autoshot and Steady Shot, as the Global Cooldown will prevent you from starting your next Steady Shot on time. Only properly weaved shots will be able to make up or attempt to make up for the increased speed that the Beast Mastery tree brings. A 3:2 Shot rotation still focuses on just Steady Shot and Autoshot with no specials. This is similar to the 1:1 rotation, but it intentionally clips a shot to squeeze in an additional Steady Shot. This rotation is rarely used, and really only should be used if you have a set bonus that would make it worth while (IE: Increased Steady Shot damage from the T6 4pc bonus). In order to put out the maximum damage a hunter is capable of, he needs to execute his or her rotation to perfection, as just one clipped shot can force you start your rotation over.
Some people think that hunters are easy because they can just spam one button and DPS. While it is true that shot rotations CAN be put into a macro and spammed, it is the good hunter that can pick up on the fly if he gets extra haste buffs, or push back on Steady Shot, and switch his rotation accordingly. Now that I've gone over How Hunter DPS works in BC, Wrath of the Lich King will change things up. A lot.
In WotLK, Steady Shot will no longer be able to "clip" Autoshot. This means that hunters will no longer have to worry about being trapped by Steady Shot's 1.5 second cast time, as the shot will be fired on time anyway. That means hunters will be able to fit in more shots and have even LESS down time (or time that we aren't actually firing a shot). This will no doubt be an increase in overall DPS for every hunter every where, but what worries some people is that it will reduce the distance between a good hunter and a bad hunter, and actually make us out to be the "Easy mode hunter" that people already think we are.
Will it be easier to do damage as a Hunter? Yessir.
Will hunters do more damage based on rotations? Yessir.
My prediction about Hunters in WotlK, is that the Bad hunters will DPS more than they used to, but a Good hunter will still get a raid spot over a bad hunter because of raid survivability, and generally being able to stay alive in encounters, and still being able to out put slightly more DPS than the Bad hunters.

2 more stable slots, and a possible consideration that they'll be integrated into the whole non-combat pet / mount cast UI thing.

omg yes i think it would be
Sorreah — Wed, 07/30/2008 - 14:17omg yes
i think it would be worth running MC just to get these new kids a leaf and have the prove they know how to be a hunter
i miss it so much the deamons were some of the best things i ever did with mine, camping in silithus and winterspring for days
my killing blow on the winterspring demon was MELEE because i had to fight for the spaw with 4 other hunters and couldnt clear a path so i used the road and got him to the hell of the guranteed evade crossroads with 1% left chugged my cleansing elixir and went for the melee. it was my last demon an a great experience
My god I wish they still had
garreth — Wed, 07/30/2008 - 13:21My god I wish they still had the epic hunter quest in game as some form of requirement. Seriously, it MADE shitty hunters into not-so-shitty hunters.
Nowadays, I see hunters that have never once done a jump shot. We've raided with hunters recently who think kiting is how Benjamin Franklin discovered electricity.
I think BC allowed a lot of half-assed hunters to taint the reputation of the class. There's really nothing for them to do in Outland than time their shot rotations (don't get me started on the number of hunters that don't even know what shot rotations are).

I really really really
Shihli — Wed, 07/30/2008 - 13:11I really really really really wish that the hunter epic quest chain from MC was still regularly pursued. It was the ultimate know-your-goddamned-class quest line.
Had to kill four demons single-handedly (well, mostly). This means no pets, no healing from outside sources, no damage from outside sources. It also forced you to learn:
1) How to chain-trap a target (ungoro demon) and deal with multiple low-health adds (silithus demon)
2) Kite (winterspring and burning steppes demons)
3) "Joust" (burning steppes and silithus demons) - the act of running into melee range just long enough to slap a wing clip on your target, then running through the target back to range
4) How and when to melee (burning steppes demon)
5) How to utilize multiple traps for all their reasons (ungoro and silithus demons)
Hell, back in MY day the demons didn't even have that newfangled 20 minute respawn timer. They had a THREE (or was it FOUR) HOUR respawn timer. You fucked up your winterspring demon kiting? Too bad! Come back in three hours.
Bigger stables better
Shihli — Wed, 07/30/2008 - 13:06Bigger stables better goddamned be implemented. Cycling rare pets sucks. I've had too many "rare" pets to count, and yet I had to abandon so many just to get them ...

Kill Shot, or the "execute
Derchlon — Wed, 07/30/2008 - 12:07Kill Shot, or the "execute shot" will be VERY useful once a boss hits 20%. However, the damage Arcane shot brings is higher until that point, and Kill shot should only be used if you can support the mana use and can sacrifice the GCD to use it. For a Survival hunter with 3/3 Sniper Training, it would even be worthwhile to toss it into your rotation around 30% boss health.
Its increased range (10 yards farther than your other shots) will allow you to use it, should the boss run out of range of your other shots, and allow you to keep your DPS time up further. The 6 second CD will keep it balanced as well.
I'm personally excited for the Sniper Training/Master Tactician/Kill Shot combo, as with my current gear in Raid buffs, would give me a 70% crit with Kill Shot with the appropriate procs/range and health requirements.
i love hunter theory craft
Sorreah — Wed, 07/30/2008 - 11:57i love hunter theory craft
what do u think of our "execute shot" i am interested in how it will be worked into hunter dps as it is not restricted to only ue at 20% or lower it just does bonus dmg then
I actually read it all...and
Aidin — Tue, 07/29/2008 - 10:05I actually read it all...and I think my head may now explode.

The hunter takes no skill
Shinso — Mon, 07/28/2008 - 19:46The hunter takes no skill argument comes from PVP. The removal of the dead zone basicaly took away any skill a hunter needed to kite someone. Depending on gear level any keyboard turning, clicking marks hunter could kill any number of classes with relative ease now.
Edit: I mean I raid frost I do 4444444444444444444444 trinket/iv 44444444444444444444 snap trinket iv maybe 444444444444444444
woot i get props but yeah
Caronte22 — Mon, 07/28/2008 - 16:47woot i get props but yeah like Der said
rotation always is a key thing.
Just because autoshot is not cliping does not mean you can hit some button randomly and hope to see yourself climb the dps later. You are going have to learn to keep your shot rotation even with all these new speed buffs.
Also Derch forgot that hunter need to learn to kite, trap, and md to there targets.
I did read it all. The only
Cdhabro — Mon, 07/28/2008 - 16:42I did read it all. The only place i would disagree is in regards to BM should stick to a 1:1 shot rotation. A slow weapon like the badge crossbow and no/little haste from gear will typically net better results with a 3:2 rotation- a little more mana intensive, but nothing chain chugging fel mana pots can't handle. Otherwise i agree with the post- a good hunter doesn't come from his ability to spam a macro- it comes from being able to research and theorycraft which gear/rotation/spec will be most beneficial.
If you read all of that,
Derchlon — Mon, 07/28/2008 - 15:55If you read all of that, props to you.
