Kitten, Cat or Crazy Cat Lady
Katibug — Fri, 08/22/2008 - 09:33
I've run into a dilema and I need some constructive feedback...
Some friends of Saja's are giving away their cats because they have a baby coming. These cats range in age from 3-5. The cats were rescued cats, and they have been taken care of by Saja's friends. They brough Isabelle over to my house to see if she would like me, like my place, and fit in. She warmed up well and it seems that she liked it at my place.
My coworker just told me that he has kittens that are up for grabs. They are 9 weeks old, litter box trained, and adorable. He said they are warm to humans and love being held.
Do I want a cat that's been trained, but may not live as long...or do I want a kitten that I can "grow up" with and raise it as my own?
Or do I take both and officially become the "Crazy Cat Lady"? Decisions decisions!

Not sure if mature cat has
Mashedtater — Sat, 08/23/2008 - 15:57Not sure if mature cat has been fixed or had it's shots, but that would have a heavy bias on my decision. I think we spent $200 on our pup getting it fixed and its shots.
Wow... I just read this
Ewiges — Sat, 08/23/2008 - 03:10Wow... I just read this entire thread and... WOW.

and Karli, doesn't that sound a lot like something else that comes with boys and girls?
Honestly, if you want my opinion (and I know you don't and will not once you here it) just take both and see who lasts longer in the microwave.
Then like starstalker said, you can always eat them.
Boy cat: Total cuddler,
karlizeth — Fri, 08/22/2008 - 13:03Boy cat:
Total cuddler, happiest thing alive, slightly dumb, and obsessed with food (so much so that he will wake us up if we sleep in past 6 by doing things like sitting on your head, licking your face, laying on your abdomen, batting at your face, chewing on your hair, etc)
Girl cat:
Grumpiest cat alive, very smart, and never misbehaves. Her occassional moments of sweetness are actually worth it because that little bitch makes you EARN her love.
Katie, Cats can be wildly
karlizeth — Fri, 08/22/2008 - 12:50Katie,
Cats can be wildly unpredictable, and I say if you have one that you KNOW is going to be a good cat (not hate you, not pee/poop/barf at random, destroy your clothes or other parts of your belongings/house), then I say keep it. There is a reason a lot of people think cats are generally evil.

I think Aidin has the best
Tankard — Fri, 08/22/2008 - 11:03I think Aidin has the best advice here Kati. I knew someone with a cat that would pee on her clothes when it got upset. They can be totally evil bastards.
I'm afraid to ask Aidin what happened to the other 19 cats. Maybe she smooshed them all together, ran some electricity through the mass and wallah, Grasen.
lol we gave them away

Inc crazy cat lady... Cats
Aidin — Fri, 08/22/2008 - 10:51Inc crazy cat lady...
Cats are E-A-S-Y to "train". There's not much to it...you swipe their paws in the kitty litter a few times show em their bowls...and boom! All set!
What ISN'T easy about cats is finding "the one". You know the cat that is sweet and lovey when wanted...or playful when needed, or good with kids etc.
Kittens are risky...cause you don't know what kind of cats they will be. If the older friendly cat is awesome...go with it, the kittens could end up being evil, and you'll hate yourself in the end for not taking the cool kitty.
Take this from someone who went thru..i dunno...20 cats before finding "the one". LoL
You're very right about "the
Katibug — Fri, 08/22/2008 - 10:59You're very right about "the one" Aidin.
My coworker said that the kittens are all pretty tame, lovable, and comfortable around humans. So that's a good start. I have to wonder if I'm crazy, then will the cat be crazy and evil too?
The older cat however, is already friendly, self-sufficient and not very demanding for attention. She loves people, but she's not an attention whore.
GAH...so many decisions!!
First I need to turn in my paperwork for the pet deposit at the apartment complex tho!
Really, the only thing you
Gares of War — Fri, 08/22/2008 - 10:44Really, the only thing you can train a cat for is to poop in a sand box. It takes like a week of doing it, best thign to do would be to try closing it off in the kitchen with food and a sandbox. It will learn. Granted, when I had a cat, I could not train it to cover its poops.
My concern is time. Do I
Katibug — Fri, 08/22/2008 - 10:19My concern is time.
Do I have the time to train a kitten? Will I be able to provide the time to the kitten to keep it happy and friendly? (I'm gone 7:45-5:30ish) every work day.
Like my friend Brett who has
Gares of War — Fri, 08/22/2008 - 09:47Like my friend Brett who has 9 cats and 5 kittens, I call him the Crazy Cat Lady, well . . . I haven't but now I will.
To amend in case people are outrage by my comment- 3+ cats if you are single, a household maye have 2*x+1. X being the number of occupants (humans) within the household.

Oh, and in response to
Shihli — Fri, 08/22/2008 - 09:46Oh, and in response to Gares' concern about the cats getting along -
That's a valid concern, if you like the idea of having two cats you might want to introduce them to each other before making a decision.
I've had excellent luck both
Shihli — Fri, 08/22/2008 - 09:46I've had excellent luck both ways. My first cat was Tigger, we bought him when he was VERY young from the Humane Society. He turned out quite well.
After Tigger died about two years ago, she bought another cat from the Humane Society. His name is Dean, and he's a few years old. He came EXTREMELY well-mannered and well-trained, and hasn't really needed anything in the way of house training.
My concern with the 9month old kittens would be if they've had their vaccinations and shots yet. If they have, then I might well take one of those ... if you get a 3yr. old cat you'll have a good 9-11 years or so with it, but with a 5yr old cat it's 7-9 ... I guess it depends on which cat you bond best with?
I dunno.
/crazy cat man
Well the unfortunate thing
Gares of War — Fri, 08/22/2008 - 09:45Well the unfortunate thing is, that the cat may nto like the Kitten. Personally, I am a kitten fan, I would say cat and kitten > kitten> cat if they are cool and you can afford it.
Crazy cat lady is if you possess more than 3 cats.
