WTB Tech help with a power supply
Vulk — Wed, 09/03/2008 - 20:28
For those who don't already know the power core in my computer finally died out. It was inevitable since I got my new graphics card a few months back. the stock power core wasnt built to handle that sort of power requirements. It figures it would burn out right as classes started so that iw would not only throw a wrench in my raiding gears but my acedemic gears aswell. >.<
I took it to my godfather's computer repair shop just to confirm that my suspicions were correct, they were. He also recommended what I was already thinking. Upgrading to a more powerful one. I bough me an Antec 500 watt power supply but something is wrong. It has all the proper connections that my computer requires but the only thing htat happens when I turn on my computer is the fans spin at their max speed. No boot up screen, hell no screen at all. Just the sound of the fans slicing the air.
My question to those that are out there able to help is this: Is there some compatibility issue that I am not aware of? All I know is that you need the proper connections and I have all those.
My computer is your basic HP Pavilion from 2 years ago, The only thing I have added is my Nvidia 8600gt video card. If you need more detailed specs I would be glad to give them to you.

So I finally fixed it. And
Vulk — Fri, 09/05/2008 - 07:46So I finally fixed it. And for all of you who were saying check the plugs (and that 4 pin plug), they were all fine. What I did find out is when i was helping carrying boxes in to their new work my godfather was cleaning everything out. He told me he took out most all the pieces to get the dust out of the nooks and crannies. On a whim I decided to take everything out again and put it back to make sure it was in place because I had to make sure everything was inserted properly. Something happened because after I got everything plugged in again, my computer came to life. Something must not have been put in properly or something that I changed as I redid everything.

Keep in mind that a power
Dufe — Thu, 09/04/2008 - 16:57Keep in mind that a power supply dying has the potential to take pretty much any other component out with it. Most commonly this seems to be a drive or the motherboard, but like I said, it could be anything. Try swapping parts in and out one at a time.
I would also check your Ram
HBK — Thu, 09/04/2008 - 12:14I would also check your Ram Vulk. Ram is useually why you don't see Post or Visual on Boot.
I called the 4 pin first!

im with G here forgetting

forgetting the little plugs on the Mobo is common
ive done it while re connecting my stuff a few times
Are you forgetting BOTH of
garreth — Thu, 09/04/2008 - 10:03Are you forgetting BOTH of the plugs that plug INTO THE MOTHERBOARD? Are you also plugging in the correct plugs into your video card?
The #1 thing i see is that everyone forgets the little 4-pin connector they need to plug into the mobo.

Could be a few things.
Blizzhax — Thu, 09/04/2008 - 08:11Could be a few things. Could be that the GFX went out. Could be that the drivers aren't working. Could be that the rails don't have enough amps.
1. Try your old card
2. List the amps on the rails
3. Do you have a pci card? If so is it plugged into it's own PCI connector?
Plug each piece in 1 by 1.
Agoney — Thu, 09/04/2008 - 08:05Plug each piece in 1 by 1. Start With just giving your vid card power, if it POSTS, add a CD-rom, then Hard drive. Make sure everything is plugged in firmly. Also make sure you plugged in your 4 pin connector into the mbo.
My parents have a bad PSU at the moment, so anytime they start it up they have to pull the plug on it, let the charge drop, and then reconnect the power chord. If they dont do that the fans will just spin.
the only thing i can think
darkwolf — Thu, 09/04/2008 - 04:00the only thing i can think of is search and see if there is a compatibility issue with the motherboard and power supply. or at least thats what first comes to mind
