Rogue Rawr Review

So yes the latest version of Rawr has a rogue module. To sum it up in one word I'd say it's, incomplete.
The numbers are wrong in some places. Especially when I saw it start suggesting to use strength/crit gems. Looks like it tries to calculate dps based on a 4s/5r cycle, which you can't change, instead of suggesting the ideal cycle for your gear.
It's definitely vastly underestimating dps, example myself it has me doing 1000 less than I have done and what spreadsheets are telling me.
Current spreadsheets do give a few more tricks. Proc modeling, CD timing usage, energy pooling, etc. Rawr doesn't have those fancy features, just a bit of average stat modeling.
On the plus side, it does look prettier than a spreadsheet. Probably much more intuitive to use. But currently, at best it's a glorified version of http://shadowpanther.net
You can get some rankings of gear (where it's not just plain wrong), but don't trust the dps numbers it gives.
One thing I may not know how to do is have it filter out gems I would never touch. Like it suggests even INT gems in gear that's superior to mine's. I don't need to know every possible iteration of gems in the sockets.
Well this might have potential. If they're able to "steal" the formulas and the cycle/proc/energy modeling from the existing spreadsheets. But with patch 3.0 getting close, there probably isn't much time for that. I'd think I probably won't look at this again til a level 80 version comes out.

If you go far enough down
Dufe — Wed, 10/01/2008 - 22:30If you go far enough down the gear drop-down, there is a list of direct upgrades. It's not as fully calculated as the other, but it does give a solid idea of where your weakest gear points are and such. (And some places you can go to fix them.)
But the normal optimize just
saedo — Wed, 10/01/2008 - 18:17But the normal optimize just crams the "best" gear in my slots. Doesn't seem to helpful unless all I wanna see is my dream set or something.

Oof, the upgrade list takes
Dufe — Wed, 10/01/2008 - 17:56Oof, the upgrade list takes a long, LONG time. I usually just do the normal optimize.
Then rebuild upgrade list?
saedo — Wed, 10/01/2008 - 16:13Then rebuild upgrade list? Seems to be taking forever to do.

The mage one just has a drop
Dufe — Wed, 10/01/2008 - 15:44The mage one just has a drop down to pick all of the different gear slots, and also gems/enchants. For each gear/gem/chant page, the items have a little green diamond to the left of them that you click to turn them on or off as options for the optimizer. I think if you don't mark any, it just uses them all.
Each module (potentially) has a different author. I've noticed that the boomkin/mage ones have alot more spell/rotation options than say the warlock one. Might be worth some note on their forums, as the mage one actually goes so far as to model different rotations throughout the fight, giving it's theoretical "optimal" sequence of cycles/ability pops for the duration of the fight. (More applicable to Arcane obviously, as it's the only one that would really have different cycles to bounce between in a single fight.)
In my opinion it's more like
saedo — Wed, 10/01/2008 - 14:11In my opinion it's more like a "threw together what they already had" before they have to scrap/redo things for the upcoming Wrath talents/mechanics/buffs. Cause most things in it seem to need some major adjustments in 2 weeks when 3.0.2.
Almost like releasing an obsolete model out there so it won't go entirely to waste. lol Well only 1 of the rogue spreadsheets is actively changing according to beta, another one has framework to change but is waiting for it to stabilize.
And how to limit choices? The optimizer I see only has "DPS rating" and "Overall rating", whatever that means, as choices. Well, maybe the rogue one really is just that, incomplete.

The hunter module is shit
Shihli — Wed, 10/01/2008 - 14:06The hunter module is shit too.
Has some gem suggestions but misses other ones entirely (agi/stam, agi/hit, etc). Can only do 1:1 or 3:2 cycles - no option for 1.5:1 or other cycles that are used by non-BM hunters.
I guess this is about what I
Dufe — Wed, 10/01/2008 - 13:49I guess this is about what I expected. This sounds like the mage module on it's first release. The site does say something about this being the last release for BC, with all efforts now focused on Wrath. So they probably kinda "threw this together" in preparation for further development in Wrath.
Also, you can limit gem/enchant choices along with gear before running an optimization.
