I came home from Blizzcon to find myself with no job :(

The company had to downsize due to the shitty economy, so now I get to play with the new talents alot more than I thought I would!

If you know anyone that's hiring, I'm a really fast learner and hard worker!!!

I wasn't "gainfully employed" for 5 months and I am starting a new job tomorrow at better pay and half the commute. It can be tough being out of work nowadays but there is a light at the end of the tunnel. For all of yall that lost your jobs my prayers are with you.

katie, it CAN take 4-6 weeks, but only if your employer is contemplating denying the claim. Generally I've seen legitimate claims come to our office within a week of filing, and we currently don't have any sort of precedence to drag our feet on getting the back to the state. Quickest turnaround I've seen was we got the claim notice about 5 days after the termination and the ex-employee started getting unemployment checks about 2 weeks after that. Also, if you file, you get "back pay", so if it does take that long to make a decision you'll still get $$ for it in the end. I would advise you to NOT delay in filing; if you let a week go by you can't go back and say "oh gee I wanted money for that week too" once it has passed.

Lastly, one of the little known things about unemployment is that you will NOT just get money based on the job you had most recently. They actually look back a total of 5 fiscal quarters, meaning that they average out the wages you had from ANY employers (regardless of why you are no longer working there) and give you a wage amount based on that. There is a common misconception that the money only comes from your last employer and that is just not true. It's basically anything that would have gone on a W-2 form for over a year that gets counted when they decide how much you'll get each week.

Well, in theory a company can always "fight" an unemployment claim regardless of the reason for discharge. It doesn't mean they will win though, and the law is heavily in favor of the employee. The law categorizes ALL unemployments as one of two things: voluntary quit or discharge. And, if you are discharged, the burden of proof is on the employer to come up with a legitimate reason as to why you don't deserve unemployment. The vast majority of cases that an employer fights when the reason is discharge are still found in favor of the employee; and it's not impossible to win unemployment even if you quit.

The IT sector often bears the brunt of downturns. We're seen as expendable, because when we do our jobs right, nothing exciting happens. At least thats how it is with my chinese overlords.

The IT dept has had a hiring freeze on it for 3 months now, even though in that time we've had 2 people quit and move on.
