Illidari Council: (courtesy of wowhead.com)
This is a quick heads up to BE PREPARED FOR ILLIARI COUNCIL tonight, specifically in regards to positioning and tanking.
After you have read the strat here, make sure to check out this vid for a great look at positioning and rogue tanking: http://warcraftmovies.com/movieview.php?id=56197
An absolutely great guide to mage tanking can be found on the EJ forums: http://elitistjerks.com/644541-post258.html
Basically, our druid tank has a hell of a job picking up that rogue. The druid will have to hang out in the middle of the room in human form and spam a macro that looks something like this:
/tar Veras
/cast Moonfire
Once we have the pull down, it's a 15 minute marathon. We got this.
Edit 2/28: I was scanning the Gorg forums (don't think any less of me, please) and came across the following quote by Ratgirl. "ILLIDARI COUNCIL: THE SUPERBOWL OF NOT STANDING IN STUFF." I thought that summed it up quite well :)

I got some advice from guy
Caliroll — Wed, 03/05/2008 - 23:43I got some advice from guy whoes guild has cleared BT. What we can do better on this fight. we have a problem with Flamestrike and Blizzard .PPL who are on Gathois need to spread out ( we did not spread out last week) and Shaman can drop Frost resist totem, and Pally can use Fire resist aura at least one pally should heal main tank ( since Gathois burst damage on main tank) Lets kill this and move on Illidain!!
Agreed. I wasn't aware
garreth — Wed, 03/05/2008 - 23:45Agreed. I wasn't aware that the damage was resistable, I'll be putting up these auras from now on.
Let's kill these fucks Friday and move to beat the game.
Some Suggestions 1) 4-5
Agoney — Mon, 03/03/2008 - 11:59Some Suggestions
1) 4-5 Interrupts on the Priest consisting of
Rogues should wear their PvP gloves so they get the interrupt bonus for deadly throw in case they can't make it in to interrupt.
2) Have Hunters DPS the rogue when it comes out. It has reduced armor and i think 200% damage buff?
Nothing changes about this fight after the pull. It's the same thing
over and over. Everyone should have spell detail up so they can avoid
the flamestrike & Blizzard.
Also, a lot of guilds dont move the paladin at all. They tank it
through the consencrate and AoE. That might be an option to look at.
Any melee actually on the paladin would have to be wary of the AoE
themselves.
We will be bringing three
garreth — Mon, 03/03/2008 - 11:25We will be bringing three rogues tonight plus Turth. That should be enough to stop those heals.
Everyone, please read the strat and be FULLY prepared. Two flasks, full food and raid consumables. We literally just need to NOT DIE and outlast them. We got this.
Not sure yet if I'm back
Kognus — Wed, 02/27/2008 - 19:57Not sure yet if I'm back raidable. I am back for all of the beardsex you can handle though.

One other thing the vid
Keisjaa — Wed, 02/27/2008 - 17:51One other thing the vid suggests is to have hunters dps Malande(threat permitting) when she's not BoP'd as her armor is a LOT lower than Gathios' (damn plate wearers)
Since the bosses have a
Dufe — Wed, 02/27/2008 - 17:16Since the bosses have a shared hp pool, it really shouldn't matter dmg wise which mage is tanking, at least if my understanding of the shared pool is accurate; ie, dps on one = dps on the other. Either way, we loose some dps from a mage who has to tank, due to the gear switch. (regardless of who it is)
in my hour and a half of
Keisjaa — Wed, 02/27/2008 - 16:17in my hour and a half of pouring over Council vids, i found this one from a mage tank perspective with a few tips as it plays, i's mostly handy to see the pull & such rather than having to figure it out/guess on positions etc

also karli remeber as fire you're DPS will need an ajustment for the FLames phase on illidan(just a reminder)
That is odd, I can't seem to

Thanks for the video! You
Kybosh — Wed, 02/27/2008 - 16:52Thanks for the video! You are right, it is a very nice PoV. And yes, I am aware of the fire immune phase; it's while I'll be slapping on two pieces of T5 to toss out some (semi) decent ABs.
Boo. This is Karli, not Kybosh...
Also, we're full flasking
garreth — Wed, 02/27/2008 - 14:41Also, we're full flasking for RoS, Shahraz, and Council. These are a big time encounters, please come as prepared as ever.

Garreth, some of the threads
karlizeth — Wed, 02/27/2008 - 14:34Garreth, some of the threads actually recommend a pull like this:
1) Mage receives bop
2) Pally bubbles
3) Pally runs in with mage behind
4) Pally eats first arcane bolt/holy fire (if not CS'd)
5) Mage spellsteals and then fireblasts to hold aggro on nethermancer
So I ... I ... I misdirect a

This is officially the real
Agoney — Wed, 02/27/2008 - 11:44This is officially the real deal now everyone. A few weeks of focus and we've beaten the burning crusade. Once we get Illidan down, BT moves to two day clear, and at the end of the 2nd day should leave time for hyjal til arch. 3rd day archimonde, and then free time until Sunwell!
personally I would rather
Vossa — Wed, 02/27/2008 - 11:04personally I would rather have karli tank as fire, with imp range she is able to CAST a fireball and then as soon as that is off just spellsteal she has the buff before they can get to her.... just my 2 cents
Your forgetting Vossa that
Disrupter — Wed, 02/27/2008 - 13:07Your forgetting Vossa that Fire spells and Arcane spells have a very different range.
Fireball has a 41 yard range with talents, while spellsteal only maintains a 31 yard range. This means, if she does Fireball/Pyro at 41 yards away, she has to get 10 yards closer before the fireball lands and spell steal the dampen magic.
This is why they recommend a sacrificial lamb(Water Elemental), it allows the mage to get much closer, spell steal, and THEN pull aggro with a fireblast. Thus saving the mage from dieing in any way or form. A bop won't save, as we've seen, anyone from the mage/priests initial casts.
A fire mage can very well tank the boss, I just thought I'd throw in that I would be willing to do it as well, and some of the benefits of having me do it. I can hardly see arcane tanking it, and to save her from respeccing to fire on a constant basis just to tank it, when theres a mage properly specced/geared for it already there.
Just my 2 cents, I really don't care who tanks it, as long as it dies :).
Rupter, A few points. I'm
karlizeth — Wed, 02/27/2008 - 14:57Rupter,
A few points. I'm not talking about re-specing to tank. I'm talking about re-specing because arcane is simply not viable for mana on any long fight, such as Vashj, Illidari Council, or Illidan. Well, at least not unless the mage gets a spriest, a shammy, and a pally judging wisdom. But even then, it's still a bit of a bitch.
Secondly, I spent many months mage tanking on Maulgar, and I have a full set of high hp, high spell hit, and high spell damage epics that I keep specifically for fights when I'd need those stats, in that order. It's not pvp gear, it's bona-fide raiding epics, so I am able to maximize all the stats I need.
Tanking is something I'm extremely comfortable doing, especially after all that time in Gruul's Lair. To be honest I rarely if ever miss raid (nor amy I planning to) so it seems a bit silly to have both of us lined up to do the job.
You mention the standing at 41 yards to cast the fireball and then needing to move in to 30 yards to spellsteal; well, that's exactly what I had to do on Maulgar and one of the methods commonly used on the council, so there is no reason to not look it as an absolutely viable pull tactic. You'd run into the exact same problem with any spec.
The difference is that with a frost spec, you're removing something that helps your dps right off the bat, and from what I've heard, you really want to make sure you have aggro over your healers. A lot of people on the EJ forums kinda dogged the whole WE pull as unecessary and overly complicated too. I looked over your spec and admit it's a tad odd...you don't have a whole lot of +hit talents; were you planning to wear a ton of +hit gear? And why the imp CS and Arc. Fort? Those are pvp talents. Just curious.
The bottom line is there are obviously mana ways to do the pull, but for our first shots we're probably going to want to go with what makes the most sense.
I am the cookie cutter arena
Disrupter — Wed, 02/27/2008 - 16:16I am the cookie cutter arena spec right now because I have been doing arena's today. I respec to arena spec in the hopes to improve my rating and allow me to do better - not being gimped by not having the proper spec. Killing a druid with my partner basically demands improved cs.
(Damned over powered resto druids, NERF!)
My raiding spec is near the same numbers as the PvP spec, but lacks basically all the talents that the pvp sec demands. Improved CS and Shatter.
That besides the fact, I'm merely offering to do it as well, if that way helps us kill the boss faster. If sacrificing a gnome and praying to the wow gods will help us kill this boss faster, I'm willing to try it. (Ewiges preffered) If putting the fire mage on dps and the frost mage on tanking duty, that works as well. You certainly put out a large amount of dps and having that on the Pally and your CS on the priest might be more beneficial then mine.
Hrm. I think I figured out
karlizeth — Wed, 02/27/2008 - 11:03Hrm. I think I figured out why I died on the last pull last night. Remember how I had just been running in to start the pull while spamming spellsteal? Well, I found another mage who experienced the same problem:
"I found that the way I was starting the pull, running toward the
Council while repeatedly jamming the spellsteal key, was causing this
kind of death - the "false GCD" from casting a spell out of range was
preventing me from actually casting a spellsteal with the correct
timing. Since then, I've run toward Zerevor and pressed the key just
once, just as the range indicator lights up, and I haven't died once."
Very healing intesive fight
Vossa — Wed, 02/27/2008 - 10:54Very healing intesive fight (very long) bring as much mp5/spirit gear as you can! Dont want people oom in the first 5 min casters also!. Once we have the pull down we got it, just have to keep a nice steady pace.
Karli as fire = win
A few more words stolen from
karlizeth — Wed, 02/27/2008 - 10:11A few more words stolen from elitist jerks that I intend to follow:
"Usually when I tank the mage I reposition him after getting initial agro, by pulling him as far to the left side of the room (facing the
boss) as possible. Then stand half way between the mage/priest in the
big gap you just created for easy access to CS the priest while taking
care of your Mage tanking spellsteal/threat duties."
I'll put the priest on /focus and use a macro that is similar to my poly macro so I can keep dpsing on the nethermancer, while tossing out a CS on the priest when she gets bopped if for some reason the other mages miss it.
Yup I agree. Focus on
Shinzwei — Wed, 02/27/2008 - 10:08Yup I agree. Focus on Illidan until hes dead. We will either be the 4th or 5th Guild on server to down him which by any means is a HUGE E-PEEN boost for our guild. DF is playing with the big boys now.
