Guild Meetup: Collective Stupidity
garreth — Sun, 08/01/2010 - 17:50
What Saja and I have had to deal with the last 3 weeks has reinforced something WoW has taught me these last few years: You can only please some of the people some of the time.
To recap: For this year's guild meetup we have a fee of $35 to attend, covering the costs of 2 full days of activiites. This covers the cost of things like:
- The provisions for the first party
- Reservation fees for the park on Saturday
- The copious quantities of food at the park on Saturday
- The provisions for the party Saturday night
- Gas money to help out the people who ended up playing taxi for 3 straight days
- A guild t-shirt since that was the NUMBER ONE THING REQUESTED AS PART OF LAST YEAR'S MEETUP
This seems pretty fair and we worked hard to get an accurate estimate for the cost. Since the cost is quite variable (shirt cost goes down per number printed, keg per-capita cost lowers with more people etc, park reservation goes UP stepwise with more people, gas goes up with more people) this is actually on the low side.
I'd also like to fill you all in a big "secret" about last year's meetup: The VAST majority of the costs were footed by about 3 people. We're talking HUNDREDS of dollars donated EACH. The cute little donate jar? It covered a bit of food and a couple six packs of beer. EVERYTHING else was because of a few generous people. We won't have that luxury this year, thus the cost must be spread fairly and evenly this time around.
That brings me to the subject of fairness. Fairness is paying your part, evenly. Fairness isn't bitching about finally having to play your part.
Don't want a t-shirt? After having the majority of people complain that the shirts weren't ready last year, we thought we'd pitch them in as part of the cost. Apparently, the extra $15 for the shirt is the sticking point for some people. In the spirit of flexibility, if you don't want a shirt, just paypal $20 to my email account (bloomcb AT gmail dot com, the account that is handling all this aggregation of funds)
I understand that things are tough for some folks and that some people are nearly hitchiking to be able to make it. I, too, feel your pain for I am one of you. Leave the t-shirt off and do the $20 fee mentioned above.
Now, here's where I lose my shit. A couple of folks have decided that because they donated a six pack last year - and that magically made everything happen - it's OUTRAGEOUS that they be required to pay more than this. Some have gone so far as to accuse me of fraud, overcharging on purpose.
I have one response to this:
If you'd like to manage and plan and schedule this, design the tshirts and haggle a good deal with a local printer, build the ecommerce interface to the website to manage payments (with a paper trail), buy the entire list of food and beverages and work out the sleeping arrangements I'M MORE THAN HAPPY TO FORWARD YOU THE BALANCE OF ALL THE PAYMENTS SO THAT YOU CAN MANAGE THIS MEETUP YOURSELF AS WELL AS NEXT YEAR'S.
Who's playing SC2?
Kwondre — Tue, 07/27/2010 - 10:02
While a comeback to WoW is likely not in the cards for me...given numerous factors including my life completely falling apart and cracking from the seams over the past few months (/drama)...I think I will be partaking in some SC2 fun.
So, who's playing?
what is your favorite boss mod?

Gares and I are moving. Many of you may already know that from talking to us in vent or his posts on the Salmon sign up threads. You'll be hearing the same thing from us for a while, because we'll only be staying in our new place for about three to three and a half months.
We were living in Kiezer Oregon near my job, I don't drive, and with my BFF and her mate. I'm no longer employed, and my BFF wants to move home to save up lots and lots of cash to get a house with while the market is still fair. So Gares and I have moved down to Albany, where he was living before he moved to be near me, with his mom. She just got a nice little two bedroom home, and Gares and I are going to stay with her, help her with the bills and what not, and thus save on the expenses of having to get our own place for such a short time. This way at lest he doesn't have to drive an hour each way in getting to and from work.
See just before 'The Guild Meet-Up' we'll be moving back north, to Portland. As you all may have heard, Gares will be studying for his PhD, come this fall, at PSU. Hopefully we'll find a nice place and be stable for a few years after that. But in short, we are moving, and it's not going to be over for a while. ><;
Here is a snap shot of what is going to happen.

From Keizer to Albany is 32 miles, and from Albany to Portland is 73 miles. All in all we'll move roughly 115 miles in the next few months. Too much! The good news is I should have Gares' desktop set up for him by the time he gets off work tomorrow. My mom is going to help me get it with her awesome van. :)
Shihli's time is up

Told myself I wouldn't make a big thing out of this. I know I grump about people making huge-assed posts on the website when they quit, so I won't be doing that.
Suffice to say, my account expires April 1st, and no doubt most of you haven't exactly seen me online much if at all the past couple of weeks. If you're that curious about why I quit, feel free to send me a PM. I don't want to make a big deal out of it.
That being said, I'll still be a personality on the website and I may make an appearance at the guild meet-up this year, money- and job-permitting. That is to say, I still have no job, but God help me if I don't have one by August.
I did want to take a moment, though, to say something. I wish all of <Downfall> the best in your endeavors, both in-game and in real life. I know times are tough for Kitten Brigade and Salmon alike, with significant raider turnover going on. I would normally say that my quitting the game wouldn't be helping, however I do know that there are a good number of people that "disagreed" with my particular brand of leadership. Just know that I did my best under the circumstances that I was given, and if I insulted, hurt, or otherwise negatively-effected you I am sorry for that. Know that it was not my intention.
I should hope that in the wake of my departure, things only get better for the raids and for the guild at large.
For those of you that wish to stay in contact that haven't already done so with me, send me a PM and I'll trade email addresses and/or phone numbers, should you so desire.
This ended up being bigger than I intended. I guess it's hard to simply walk away from something that you've given five years of your life towards. I guess that should be expected.
Either way, peace.
WoWCubes Back On Sale: $699 For Great Raid Performance
garreth — Sat, 03/06/2010 - 01:14
I've been approached by many people regarding the ol' Cubes and thought I'd get my ordering/building system back up and going again. WoWCubes are back up and ready to be built for any and all that are looking for top notch raid performance.
Quick Specs:
- Windows 7 Home Premium, 32-bit
- AMD Athlon II X2 255 3.1Ghz Dual Core CPU
- 2 GB of DDR2 800 RAM
