Locks and Mages: Back to balance

Submitted by garreth on Fri, 08/08/2008 - 08:16.

From WoR:

Mages & Warlock DPS (src)
Warlocks got to crazy land with the % modifiers to their damage output (specifically with Demonic Sacrafice), that's been toned down. Warlocks should never be able to out DPS a Mage with no pet out. Alike a Hunter, their pet should factor into their total damage output. Warlocks that sacrifice pretty much all utility talents should come very close to Mage DPS, but those who invest in group/raid utility should be lower.

Looks like locks and mages will be back on par in Wrath.

Pyrael's Moving!

Submitted by Pyrael on Wed, 08/06/2008 - 11:43.

Hey guys!

I just wanted to let everyone know that I'm moving over the next couple days so I won't be raiding unless through some form of internet magic I can play, in which case I will of course reverse my blog here and raid this week. However, that's probably not going to happen so sorry I can't be there this week to blow shit up, but I will be back on A.S.A.P. I will also be sending Ataraxia and other raid leaders messages pertaining to the above, so please no one feel the need to let the raid leaders know that I'm moving. Unless of course they are ignoring their messages and getting pissed off that I'm not online for raid. If that happens please let them know that I'm moving, the wraith of Garreth, Ataraxia and company is furious and I don't want to anger the WOW gods 8).

Thanks again and I'll c'ya guys online soon,

Py

Gear Upgrade Explosion

Submitted by Epatrick on Tue, 05/20/2008 - 00:55.

So, after patiently biding my time for over a year and a half, I
finally replaced my last piece of kara gear with a badge piece.  I
now have four pieces of t6 (OMG shadowbolt bonus>all) Last week, for
the first time since we were learning bosses in the d1 bc instances, I
experienced a threat cap.  I actually pulled aggro off of our t6
threat machine and had to be bop'd...It was awesome.

The only
things that I see as gear upgrades easily within reach are the
instances we don't do, or if we do, raid on days I'm working.  WTB
exalted ring from Scale of the sands.  My ring on pudo procs all
the time and I would love to add that little extra kick to my
constantly casting ass.  Perhaps even upgrade my badge piece to
malefic gloves and be full 5/5 t6.  (the gloves are probably the
strongest piece of the malefic set)  I've been steadily collecting
blessing cards to turn in but I keep giving random ones to
guildies.  I hope we do Illidan to the point where most of our
casters have the skull of guldan, because really, the spike in dps I
see between enixa and myself of 2% is that trinket...and I'm hugely
competitive :)

Epat's deleted post that had to go somewhere

Submitted by Epatrick on Fri, 05/09/2008 - 00:52.

/dips into his well of warlockdom and spews forth a vomit of text regarding warlocks

Honestly, Affliction when we were raiding gruul's and SSC was
awesome As haste gear and higher item levels started getting into the
mix, the sheer amount of shadowbolts an epat geared caster can toss out
that hit anywhere from 2.5k-8.7k is quite astonishing.  In long fights
where my only job is to blast the ever loving hell out of a boss
(illidan being the obvious example) myself and dikymo (both not
tanking, both sac/snf locks) have topped the dps meters.  The only
thing that stops us is the threat cap.  With a shadow priest and a
shaman, a caster group with mixed arcane mages/bolt locks are the
powerhouses of the dps.  Oh, and eff the freakin' 40% passive threat
redux on arcane mages, eff it.

Side note: In Hamfist i'm seeing a cool trend of the purple squares
getting love in the shaman/shadow priest groups with the arcane mages
on nuke fights.  What I kind of giggle at is the thought of an arcane
mage trying to do anything like long term massive dps without a
shadowpriest at the very least.  If an arcane mage in the tanking group
could top an affliction locks dps, I'd be very very impressed, just
from the sheer amount of mana conservation/pot chugging/gem guzzling
they'd have to do.  Most mages respec to fire or frost (from my
experience with hamfist) if they know they are/are not going to be
getting a shadow priest.  The warlocks traditionally stay with one spec
(affliction or destro) and are put wherever there's room and inevitably
there's always, always, always the call from the raid leader for "do
you run with your imp out" and I have to bid goodbye to my affliction
lock brother jester who sticks his imp down like the totem it's always
been valued for.

Epat's Vent

Submitted by Epatrick on Tue, 03/11/2008 - 02:26.

So, an interesting trend has started to appear in our vent channels, nifty little things called "phantoms" they join channels silently, alert no one to their presence and provide all sorts of numlicious gossip to those who use them in channels with unwary users.

My view : This is akin to picking up a telephone in your house quietly so that you can hear what people are saying on the line. If you phantom into a channel, you know you're not part of the conversation. You didn't knock on the door to their chat. They don't know you're there. You're eavesdropping. It's rude. if you want to listen to them, go into the effing channel as yourself and not your phantom. say "hey guys, watcha talking about"? Not everything is fluffy bunnies and happy gnome punting. if they want to include you in the convo, they will, if not, they'll politely ask you to leave the channel so they can continue their discussion in private.

I'm not one to take out my frustrations in public, so sometimes I go into a private channel and complain about things that I don't really care about to people that I trust to keep their mouth shut and just listen. They know I'm not serious when I'm ranting. They know I don't mean the sometimes downright nasty things that I say because, let's face it, we all have horrible thoughts that sometimes we just need to let out in a non constructive way. I make really bad jokes that have no foundation in seriousness, but a phantom doesn't know that. A phantom only knows that things are being said about so and so.

There are only a few acceptable uses of thee phantom in my opinion:

1. monitoring a raid in case they need you while doing other things (i.e. pvping, running an instance, what have you)

2. going into a music channel as a phantom to listen to w/e the dj in there is playing.

Illidari Council Shots

Submitted by Epatrick on Sat, 03/01/2008 - 03:13.

I really really like this fight for a few reasons

  • Awareness of surroundings (forces all classes to actually look at the game, be aware of their surroundings and make a large effort to not stand in the shit that hurts)
  • Situational awareness (watching grid to see if you're going to get a heal or need to pot, is that rogue running at me, where the hell can I stand to maximize dps but still land my required kick/CoT/CS)
  • Self Sufficiency (I love love love the fight for this reason, and this reason above all else)  I ate nine envenoms over the course of attempts, and that again or more of divine wraths, random AoE's and my own lifetaps/reflective shielded dots.  I never died, honestly, unless I had just lifetapped and/or gotten caught in an aoe before a poison, I never needed heals.  My HS's sat unused for the first 3/4 of attempts because I simply didn't need more than drain life/death coil/or the fast reflexes of our healers.  This right here, this reason, is what will separate the good raiders from those you say "fuck, I want that guy on my wing when it's go time"

This is the iron man contest of wow.  "do you have it in you to dps/heal/tank for fifteen minutes totally self aware/sufficient/sustained while contributing in a stellar manner"  This is the hard core.  Illidan to me, meh.  five stages, learn a phase, move on, new stage.  Illidari is "these are horrible things happening all over the place, can you adapt, survive and conquer".  We've had a pretty easy learning curve up until now, everyone has fights they're required to perform above standard at, but this fight requires EVERYONE to be THAT good.

dmg meters and aggro

Submitted by Epatrick on Thu, 02/28/2008 - 02:40.

so, I thought I'd share why as destro the RoS fight is easymode.  having a felhunter out to eat the runeshield gimps my dmg...a lot, therefore no aggro worries. in phase 1 I spend ten seconds of dps watching the rogues tanking in case they get low and need a SS.  phase 3 I'm so badly geared compared to the rest of the casters that I could probably dps without salv and still not worry about aggro.  don't know what I'm going to do about my gear/dmg, I almost feel like I'm holding the raid back.

SSC Leo Lock Tank : What to Do

Submitted by Aidin on Wed, 11/28/2007 - 13:51.

Park your felhunter in a corner before the fight starts. During the 3 adds, use Life Tap. Healing is easy at this point and you want full mana when Leo comes out. IMMEDIATELY after the 3 adds go down and Leo comes out, put a Curse of Doom on him.
